People Love Video, But Will They Share Yours?

Video marketing is an absolute must for the online entrepreneur. Videos are a great way to get other people to spread the message about your business. Video is probably the most viral of the various media methods, because people get more excited about videos.

Taking some time to study both popular and unpopular videos shows just what you have to do to create content that is contagious and makes your videos go viral. The following characteristics are found in many popular videos that attract a lot of free attention and business, so make sure to include them in your next video.

Provide Value

If your information is valuable and interesting enough, people will want to share it. One of the main reasons why videos go viral is that they give away extremely valuable information for free.

Think about the last time you stumbled across a blog post that was recorded in video, and also written. Though the message was the same in text and video, the video probably reached out to you on a much deeper level. You may have even watched the video rather than taking the time to read the written blog post.

Keep It Short

One survey revealed in the New York Times showed that 19% of people watching videos online go away after just 10 seconds. A full 44% of viewers had left by the one minute point. Be creative, thought-provoking and make great content, but make sure it’s short and to the point.

Be Positive

In general, positive videos are shared more often than content that brings us down or makes us sad. The quality of your content definitely matters. No one is going to share a video that doesn’t move them in some way, inform them or help them solve a big problem.

Be Relevant

Videos go viral because they are well-timed. That’s why a viral video rarely lasts for more than a few days or weeks. Sometimes it only lasts for a few minutes or hours. Brushing up on your current events will help you create videos that tie into things people are talking about right now.

Create An Attention Grabbing Headline

Nobody will watch your video in the first place if you don’t get them to click on your headline. Headlines with numbers, “how to” headlines, and list headlines are excellent for getting people to view your video.

When a video goes viral it gets passed from person to person and can continue on and on for a very long time. Make sure that your business doesn’t miss out on the opportunities provided by video marketing.

Viral Marketing – Can You Make it Work?

Viral marketing is widely touted as the new way to increase market penetration and build brand awareness in the internet space. Viral marketing isn’t quite as contagious among consumers as advertisers would like, according to a new report from Jupiter Research. Viral marketing is also sometimes called viral advertising.

Marketing

Marketing on the web is a whole new arena, and companies/people are going to try anything to self promote. Viral marketing and viral advertising refer to marketing techniques that use preexisting social networks to produce increases in brand awareness, through self-replicating viral processes, analogous to the spread of pathological and computer viruses. [1] Viral marketing is a marketing phenomenon that facilitates and encourages people to pass along a marketing message voluntarily. Viral marketing is based on this natural human behavior. The goal of marketers interested in creating successful viral marketing programs is to identify individuals with high Social Networking Potential (SNP) and create Viral Messages that appeal to this segment of the population and have a high probability of being passed along. One example of successful viral marketing is Hotmail, a company, now owned by Microsoft, that promotes its service and its own advertisers’ messages in every user’s e-mail notes. Viral marketing describes any strategy that encourages individuals to pass on a marketing message to others, creating the potential for exponential growth in the message’s exposure and influence. Some viral marketing strategies work better than others, and few work as well as the simple Hotmail. The medium that carries your marketing message must be easy to transfer and replicate: e-mail, website, graphic, software download.

Video

Viral promotions may take the form of video clips, interactive Flash games, advergames, images, or even text messages. Here are some guidelines we follow.: Make it short: 15-30 seconds is ideal; break down long stories into bite-sized clips Designed for remixing: create a video that is simple enough to be remixed over and over again by others. Helpful analysis of a great example of an online viral campaign aided by short TV ads that lead people to a 7-minute video. In other words, not all videos go viral organically – there is a method to the madness. And Lee Jeans sent messages with news of a cool video game featuring characters from TV and print ads. “There might be pickup on a video eight months after it aired, when the subject matter appears in the news.

Free

A good example of viral marketing is many of the free email services available on the internet. Free e-mail services, free information, free “cool” buttons, free software programs that perform powerful functions but not as much as you get in the “pro” version. The strategy is simple: Give away free e-mail addresses and services, attach a simple tag at the bottom of every free message sent out: “Get your private, free email at….. Free Internet marketing resources, web site development tutorials, commerce strategies & software solutions. Gives away valuable products or services.” “Free” is the most powerful word in a marketer’s vocabulary. They may not profit today, or tomorrow, but if they can generate a groundswell of interest from something free, they know they will profit “soon and for the rest of their lives” (with apologies to “Casablanca”). The beauty about all this is that it is free advertising.

Articles

Article marketing is not yet fully understood as being one of the best ways to advertise your website: even better than pay per click advertising. Articles as a viral marketing tool A very successful strategy is the development of articles and tutorials such as these. Article Marketing: the new web marketing frontier that works. Authors, who give away free articles, seek to position their articles on others’ web pages. A news release can be picked up by hundreds of periodicals and form the basis of articles seen by hundreds of thousands of readers. Submitting articles to Article Archives and eZine Publishers submitting articles you have written is one of the quickest and easiest ways to get instant FREE publicity to your web site and is also an excellent way to get links back to your site without linking back.

You tube

The core concept of video marketing on YouTube is to harness the power of the site’s traffic. There are tens of thousands of videos uploaded to YouTube each day (I’ve heard estimates between 10-65,000 videos per day). It seems obvious, but people see hundreds of videos on YouTube, and the title and thumbnail are an easy way for video publishers to actively persuade someone to click on a video. Have you ever watched a video with 100,000 views on YouTube and thought to yourself: “How the hell did that video get so many views. When views start trailing off after a few days to a week, it’s time to add some more generic tags, tags that draw out the long tail of a video as it starts to appear in search results on YouTube and Google. For the first week that a video is online, we don’t use keyword tags to optimize the video for searches on YouTube. I’m not talking about obscure tags; I’m talking about unique tags, tags that are not used by any other YouTube videos.

Friends

A large proportion of everyone’s friends and family members are now online or soon will be. An Epidemic of “Viral Marketing” Getting Web users to pass ads and promos on to friends is effective and cheap — perfect for today’s dot-coms. Social scientists tell us that each person has a network of 8 to 12 people in their close network of friends, family, and associates. A marketer does something and a consumer tells five or ten friends. Three of those friends might tell a friend. AND I will forward this article to my marketing friends. For years marketers have their friends at newspapers when they want to leak stories, I’m sure it’s not a leap to work out who picks content at video sharing companies and put them on the entertainment list too.

Software

The medium that carries your marketing message must be easy to transfer and replicate: e-mail, website, graphic, software download. Viral marketing “started out as a business-to-consumer tool for mass marketing products” such as music, books, and software, says Kim Brooks, Internet-marketing consultant at Bardo-Brooks Marketing, based in Kirkland, Wash. If one is competent in creating software programs for different applications, he can actually use them to as marketing tools. One must make sure, though, that the software contains some kind of advertisement containing the marketing message. Although it naturally lends itself to free “communications” or network applications, Viral Marketing could also be applied to traditional stand-alone software to accelerate the word-of-mouth spread of good software. It turns software piracy into a sales opportunity.

Viral marketing is a good bit about winning hearts and minds. It is widely touted as the new way to increase market penetration and build brand awareness in the internet space. Viral marketing is not about wasting people’s time; it is instead about giving something that want to spend time on. It is not only putting yourself out there with some free information, but its utilizing the “coolness” factor by getting people to write about you and spread the word, in this case the iPhone. Viral marketing is always as effective as others say it if it would be done properly.

What Is Viral Marketing? Viral Marketing Ideas to Flood Your Site With Traffic

Viral marketing is a specific marketing strategy which relies on individuals to spread a message as opposed to relying on conventional and traditional marketing methods to do so. The message is the virus in this case and it’s spread quickly amongst the “hosts” who pass it along to other people, most typically in this day and age via the internet.

Through viral marketing, your message takes on a life of its own and the term viral implies that that message is being passed on/shared by a large number of people. With the advent of social media and social networking, viral marketing is a staple of the internet these days as it’s quite common for a video, image, or story (all types of messages) to be quickly shared amongst a large number of people and percentage of the internet population.

Why should you care about viral marketing? If you haven’t gathered by now, viral marketing can be a HUGE source of traffic for your website if nothing else if the message is kept on your website or at least links to your website. Once your message goes viral, your job is essentially done as instead of having to go through the painstaking job of building your own links and traffic to your message, you have thousands if not millions of people doing this for you.

Now the obvious question is how do we create a viral marketing campaign?

Viral Marketing Ideas

The most obvious form of viral marketing ideas or examples simply involves creating great content. “Great” is too abstract and subjective; you need to create content which is unique, something you can’t find somewhere else, something which is hilarious to a lot of people, something which is shocking to a lot of people, something which is controversial, and something which is easy to get into.

Keep in mind that the attention span for the average internet user is at an all time low in this Twitter age we live in, so your message should be as succinct as possible as no one wants to share and take responsibility for something which doesn’t have a chance of being shared easily (it makes sense if you think about it).

Let’s consider a few successful viral marketing examples and campaigns from recent history.

Videos – Videos go viral more than any other form of media because they’re so easy to share and let’s face it, everybody loves a funny or whacky video. YouTube is a breeding ground for viral marketing sensations. Just look at The Lonely Island’s YouTube channel. They’re approaching 1 billion views with well over 1 million subscribers and yet they only have 78 videos on their channel. It’s gotten to the point where every time in which they release a new video, it goes viral and takes the web by storm.

Of course they had to start somewhere, and their breakout first video “Jizz in My Pants” garnered them instant fame and now well over 100 million views on its own as more and more people began to share this amongst their friends because of how ridiculous, hilarious, and revolutionary it was.

Pictures – Photos get retweeted like nobody’s business. This sarcastic photo of the “devastation” from the relatively calm DC earthquake from a few weeks ago was being shared and retweeted thousands of times over within the first hour after the quake (spending part of my time in the DC area, I have to admit this was pretty good).

In the same vein, viral marketing and the internet played a huge role in getting Obama elected. Everyone was showing their support for him because they either believed in his campaign of change or they just thought it was the hip thing to do. In getting back to images, remember when those red, white, and blue Shepard Fairey designed Obama posters were cropping up EVERYWHERE on AND offline? Many of them with just one word inscribed at the bottom: “Hope”. The most simple message delivered in a unique and cool way which everyone could relate to; no wonder it was so effective.

Games/Scripts – People love simple games for killing time in or out of the office. The “Elf Yourself” campaign from OfficeMax is a prime viral marketing example because it was based on a simple script where people could upload pictures of their faces and they would get put on elf bodies and dance in a little video which was made for sharing. Lots of people uploaded their videos which received thousands of views individually. Whenever anyone saw one of these videos for the first time they of course wanted to know how they could do it themselves and there you go: more traffic for OfficeMax.

Burger King’s “Subservient Chicken” was another example of this from years ago where the user could make the chicken do different things by entering commands. It was pretty weird but fun at the same time seeing the chicken in question doing simple commands which you gave it in his living room.

Viral Marketing Vs. Viral

I want to make one final distinction which you need to keep in mind between something which can be considered viral marketing and something which can just be considered viral. Not everything which goes viral is an example of viral marketing.

There are lots of YouTube videos with well over 1 million views from everyday people which went viral, but without the marketing aspect then there isn’t much of a benefit to that person beyond a little internet notoriety (yay).
